38" tall. The lion is the symbol of the royal family of the Abomey kingdom. This chair is carved one a single piece of wood. The wood is an exotic tropical wood called monkey pod. This chair is built to last; it will never wear out. The price of a set of four of this same chair design is $4,000. Please click on the image to see another view of this beautiful chair. We also have a variety of other designs of this chair.

This stool is genuine. It was used in Cameroon for many years. It is of the finest quality. There are many stools of this design available which are newly made but this one is authentic and old. photoWoodblock stool - Ivory Coast - unknown tribe $400.00
We are out of stock of these at this moment but more are on the way. These measure between 18 and 24" tall. They are made of very hard, dense wood. They are used as chopping blocks against which other wood is chopped into smaller pieces to burn in cooking fires. As these logs are worn away by ax blows they are turned to distribute the damage more or less evenly around the piece. Then, before the log is severed, it is removed from service and turned on end to be used as a stool. No two are ever identical.

photoold tall stool - Ivory Coast - unknown tribe $300.00
Stools of this type are found commonly throughout West Africa in the compounds of the villages where the majority of the population lives. This one is an exceptionally well executed example of the genre. It measures 18" tall and 10" in diameter.

photowoodblock stool - first set - Ivory Coast - No tribal association $400.00
The man who made these stools did not start out with the intention of making a stool. He chose a hardwood log against which he chopped softer wood into pieces people use to burn to cook over. The log serves to protect the choppers axe. The majority of people in Africa cook over open flames. Wood is the fuel. Slowly, after a lot of wood has been chopped, the log is worn away. The man turns it so it wears evenly and just before it breaks through he stands it up and uses it as a stool. Please click on the image to see 2 more of these haphazardly sculptural objects.

photoTall 2-level stool - Togo - Fon $1950.00
This exceptional stool measures 22" tall and 14 1/2" in diameter. Please click on the image for 2 more views of this extraordinary stool.

photoPair of small spider stools - Cameroon - Bamileke $1200.00
These two almost identical stools are almost the same size. One is 11" in diameter and 11 3/4" tall; the other is 10 1/2" in diameter and 11 1/2" tall. Either stool is available individually for $800. Please click on the image for another view of this great pair of stools.

photoOversize spider web design large stools - Cameroon - Bamileke $1200.00
This is a stylized version of the traditional spider web design stool portrayed elsewhere on this page. This stool measures 15" in diameter by 15" tall.

photoAuthentic 4-leg stool - Togo - Fon $1950.00
The design of this stool is unlike any other tribal design among African stools. The same thing can be said about so many of the other designs available across the continent but this one is truly among the most unusual. The round top measures 15 1/2" in diameter. It is 9" tall. The leg span measures 21 x 13". Please click on the image for 2 more views of this very unusual stool.

photo4 head stool - Guinea - Baga $750.00
This fine stool measures 13.5" tall and 10" diameter. Please click on the image for another view of this unusual stool.

photo5 leg stool - Ivory Coast - Senufo $3000.00
This stool is quietly elegant in its simplicity. This is one of the most extraordinary stools I have ever seen. There are plenty of 4 leg round stools though few which are so much taller than they are round and none with an extra, fifth leg in the center, with no apparent function except to demonstrate the exceptional skill of the man who carved it. The height is 18"; the diameter 13". Please click on the image for 2 more views of this truly great stool.

photo3 leg stool with head - Burkina Faso - Lobi $600.00
This fully patinated stool is very well used. It measures 22" long and 8 1/2" in height. Please click on the image for 2 more views.

photoLarge "common" round stool - Burkina Faso - Gourmantche $500.00
This is a nice example of the stools you find in almost every compound in the African bush. At 16" tall and 13 1/2" in diameter this one is quite large by comparison with most. The vast majority of Africans live in villages rather than cities and most of those live in "compounds", groups of huts, usually round, each belonging to a member of one family. Furniture is limited; the most common item of furniture is the round stool of which this one is very characteristic though most are much smaller than this one. Most often these common stools are used outside and get moved around quite casually so are not maintained in the way we tend to maintain our furniture; a lot of wear is always common. This one has lots of wear around the sides and the top is very heavily patinated. The base of this one broke in normal use but was still - and remains to this day - useful so it continued to be used even in its imperfect condition. Please click on this image for another view.

photoPenis handle stool - Togo - Ewe $400.00
This interesting stool is 15" long and 6 1/2" tall. As it was told to me this stool is normally used by women. It stands out among African stools in that it is given to a woman by her husband when he travels to remind her of him and thereby guarantee her faithfulness. The representation is spiritual, not functional. Please click on the image for another view of this stool.

photoSquare bottom round top stool - Mali - Bozo $950.00
This uncommon stool is 15 1/2" diameter and 12 1/2" tall. Please click on the image for another view.

15 1/4" tall, 20 1/2" diameter. Please click on the image for 2 more views.

photoMore 4 leg round stools - Ivory Coast - Senufo $1000.00
19 1/4" diameter, 14 1/2" tall. Please click for another view of this one and of another similar stool which measures 18" diameter and 16 1/4" tall, $800.

photoSmall mask image stool - Ivory Coast - Baule $1200.00
This old authentic stool is an unusual carved artifact. 10 1/2" height, 10 1/2" diameter. Please click for another view.

photoBlack common round stool - Burkina Faso - Gourmantche $500.00
This is another "common" round stool, found often in the compounds of Africa. This one, measuring 12" tall and 11" diameter, has been smoked to blacken it and is in excellent condition. Please c

photoDouble design stool - Burkina Faso - Gourmantche $950.00
This is a great modification on the more common round stool design. It is 11 3/4" tall, 10 3/4" diameter. Please click for another view.

13" height, 12" diameter. Solid patina on top, worn all around. This stool was used for a long time. Please click for more views.

photoMushroom shape dowry stool - Guinea - Malinke $5000.00
This great stool is closer to a table. 17" height, 29" diameter. Well used. When a girl gets married she sits on the stool and her dowry is arrayed beneath her, around the stool. This is a very large piece of furniture. Please click for another view. Please see another, smaller one elsewhere on this page. We have 2 more that are even larger than this one.

14 1/2" tall, 22 1/4" diameter. Please click for another view.
