photoOld mask fragment from Afare - Ivory Coast - Baule $2950.00
11 1/2" overall mounted height; the mask is 9 1/2" tall. Circa 1840. This mask was authenticated by the late, renowned African art authority, Roy Sieber, just 5 months prior to his death in 2001. Although Dr. Sieber confirmed its authenticity he did not verify its age. My supplier in Africa claimed it was this old but Dr. Sieber believes it is probably 100 years newer.

photoLarge old mask from Guerebo - Ivory Coast - Yaure $1800.00
19" tall, circa 1975

photoTall Chekko mask - Mali - Bamana $1250.00
Chekko is a ceremony held once or twice a year, always at harvest time in the Fall and sometimes at planting in the Spring. There is a procession featuring masks made exclusively for the ceremony that year; after that year they are discarded. Chekko masks from one year to the next vary greatly. There is a wide variety of their designs from village to village and from year to year. Therefore this Chekko processional mask is not old, having been used for only one Chekko, but it is genuine, not made for sale.

photoLargest Guro masks - Ivory Coast - Guro $750.00

photoEpa ceremony Gelede mask - Nigeria - Yoruba $1800.00
This mask is 43" tall. It is used during the annual Epa festival which celebrates the important social roles of a town: its chiefs, farmers, warriors, hunters, priests, and women. The climax of the festival occurs when male dancers appear, surrounded by their followers and wearing tall, heavy masks like this one, receiving salutations, praise names, and songs. This mask celebrates a warrior, represented by the equestrian figure which it the central theme of the mask. Please click on the image to see a side view of this beautiful mask.

photoAdone antelope mask - Burkina Faso - Kurumba $1800.00
51" tall, this is a very fine quality example of this distinctive and well-known form in African art. The Kurumba, a small tribe in northern Burkina Faso, wear these in a dance celebrating the death of a chief or other important person. They are normally danced in pairs. This mask is probably the best known object the Kurumba make and use so the mask itself is most often called quite simply a Kurumba. Please click on the image for closer view of this fine piece.
