Objects such as this were produced exclusively for the nobility of the Abomey kingdom of Benin. Only Abomey royalty had access to brass production. The royal family accumulated such pieces and distributed them to favored individuals as symbols of their power.

38" tall. The lion is the symbol of the royal family of the Abomey kingdom. This chair is carved one a single piece of wood. The wood is an exotic tropical wood called monkey pod. Asen are iron stakes with round flat tops adorned with a wide variety of objects which presumably evoke the spirit of the individual the stake represents.

70 x 51 3/4". This is a contemporary flag, designed by an accomplished and exceptionally skilled textile artist. He follows in the footsteps of the early textile artists commissioned by the Fon court to produce these textiles which were symbols of the king of the Fon people, of the ancient Kingdom of Abomey. Click on the image to see two other versions of this same flag. The second one measures 60 x 59 1/2" and the third one measures 57 1/2 x 51". The second and third are $350 each.
