photoBrass loving couples - Burkina Faso - Bobo $125.00
I came across these 12 different brass couples while visiting a brass studio in Burkina Faso, quite by accident. Each position is different and the quality of all is excellent, way better than any similar such product I have found in all the time I have been in Africa. These are all one of a kind; there were no others. This first couple measures 5" x 2 1/2" tall. Please click on the image to view 2 more couples. The second one measures 4 3/4 x 2 1/2", the third 4 3/4 x 2 3/4". All are the same price $125.

photoFirst painted Walaja Koranic school board - Burkina Faso - Mossi $300.00
This Koranic school board, referred to in Burkina Faso as a "walaja", was painted by a marabout, an Islamic religious leader. The verses from the Koran are meant to be read, not re-written on this same board. Please click on the image to view the other side of the same piece, also beautifully painted. This board measures 20 x 6 1/2" tall.

photoAdone antelope mask - Burkina Faso - Kurumba $1800.00
51" tall, this is a very fine quality example of this distinctive and well-known form in African art. The Kurumba, a small tribe in northern Burkina Faso, wear these in a dance celebrating the death of a chief or other important person. They are normally danced in pairs. This mask is probably the best known object the Kurumba make and use so the mask itself is most often called quite simply a Kurumba. Please click on the image for closer view of this fine piece.

photoLarge "common" round stool - Burkina Faso - Gourmantche $500.00
This is a nice example of the stools you find in almost every compound in the African bush. At 16" tall and 13 1/2" in diameter this one is quite large by comparison with most. The vast majority of Africans live in villages rather than cities and most of those live in "compounds", groups of huts, usually round, each belonging to a member of one family. Furniture is limited; the most common item of furniture is the round stool of which this one is very characteristic though most are much smaller than this one. Most often these common stools are used outside and get moved around quite casually so are not maintained in the way we tend to maintain our furniture; a lot of wear is always common. This one has lots of wear around the sides and the top is very heavily patinated. The base of this one broke in normal use but was still - and remains to this day - useful so it continued to be used even in its imperfect condition. Please click on this image for another view.

photoBlack common round stool - Burkina Faso - Gourmantche $500.00
This is another "common" round stool, found often in the compounds of Africa. This one, measuring 12" tall and 11" diameter, has been smoked to blacken it and is in excellent condition. Please c
