The royal family accumulated such pieces and distributed them to favored individuals as symbols of their power.

Asen are stuck into the ground near the family house in memory of a deceased member of the family. Asen are iron stakes with round flat tops adorned with a wide variety of objects which presumably evoke the spirit of the individual the stake represents.

He follows in the footsteps of the early textile artists commissioned by the Fon court to produce these textiles which were symbols of the king of the Fon people, of the ancient Kingdom of Abomey.
