This 7 1/2" tall object is a fine reproduction of an 11th century Ife piece. There is a male figure "wrapped around a vessel positioned on the circular platform of a stool. The figure holds the looped handle of the stool with its left hand and a scepter in its right." The original is made of zinc brass and measures 4 7/8" tall and is the property of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Nigeria.

Epa ceremony Gelede mask - Nigeria - Yoruba $1800.00
This mask is 43" tall. It is used during the annual Epa festival which celebrates the important social roles of a town: its chiefs, farmers, warriors, hunters, priests, and women. The climax of the festival occurs when male dancers appear, surrounded by their followers and wearing tall, heavy masks like this one, receiving salutations, praise names, and songs. Martins Omowumi John - Oshogbo artist - Nigeria - Yoruba $400.00
I met Martins in the Fall of 2003 after he found this website and contacted me to ask me to showcase his paintings here. I was impressed by his aggressive promotion of his art and I loved his paintings. In the 1960s a European artist went to southwestern Nigeria to Oshogbo in Yorubaland. She set up an art school to teach young Nigerians to paint using European techniques with their own uniquely African inspiration. Martins is a modern day student of that school. He was born in Lagos State on April 4th 1974. In 1984 his father, who worked for the National Electric Power Authority of Nigeria, was transfered to Oshogbo in Osun State and moved his 10 children there with him. He is the second of 10 children and the first to grow up in the Land of Art and Culture which is Oshogbo. Growing up surrounded by that artistic presence convinced him that was his destiny. Martins only income is from the sale of his paintings. His dream is to see his work spread around the world. Please click on Martins portrait to see 2 of his paintings.
