Ancestor figures - Sets # 1, 21, 24
photo of Ancestor figures - Sets # 1, 21, 24 item #94
Ghana - Ewe

These figures are kept by a family in memory of specific members of their family who are deceased. Where limbs are missing or the body is imperfect the person represented would have actually lost that body part or would have been otherwise disfigured. Very often those figures belonging to a single family will share characteristics which imply a family relationship. The figures in these 3 sets measure from 7 to 7 3/4" tall. Please click on the image to view sets #21 and #24. All of the figures are the same price, $75 each. Please look further down on this same page to see more sets of these fascinating and widely variable figures.

Ewe twin dolls
photo of Ewe twin dolls item #458
Togo - Ewe

These twin dolls measure 13" tall. They are comparable in function to the better known Yoruba figures known as "ibeji". When a mother loses her children in birth she has these figures carved and takes care of them for the rest of her life. Although twins are the best known of these dolls, it is also common for single children to be represented similarly. Please click on the image to see the reverse side of this pair of twins.

Penis handle stool
photo of Penis handle stool item #570
Togo - Ewe

This interesting stool is 15" long and 6 1/2" tall. As it was told to me this stool is normally used by women. It stands out among African stools in that it is given to a woman by her husband when he travels to remind her of him and thereby guarantee her faithfulness. The representation is spiritual, not functional. Please click on the image for another view of this stool.
